Canada and Sweden booked their place in the finals of the women’s football tournament in Tokyo Olympics after their wins in the semi-finals earlier today.

Canada 1-0 United States

Canada’s 1-0 win over the world champions the United States will go down as a memorable moment in their footballing history.

The Canadians picked up a 1-0 win in the semi-finals against the Americans after a well-taken penalty from Jesse Fleming on the 75th minute of the game.

The USWNT were one of the favourites to win gold the summer, and they will be devastated with their first defeat against Canada in over 20 years.

This will be Canada’s first appearance in an Olympic final, and they will be desperate to go all the way.

Australia 0-1 Sweden

Meanwhile, Sweden managed to beat Australia with a solitary goal from Fridolina Rolfo in the 46th minute of the game.

But Australia missed a chance to go ahead 1-0 before the half-time, when Sam Kerr’s goal from a set piece was ruled out by referee.

The Swedes managed to win a silver medal in Rio five years ago, and they will be hoping to strike gold this time around. They were beaten by Germany in the Rio final.

Matildas will be disappointed with the defeat earlier today and especially after losing their calm in stoppage time.

The Aussies were down to ten after Ellie Carpenter was sent off for a challenge on Lina Hurtig. It came at the dying moments of the match, and Carpenter will not be available for the decider for third place.

Australia will now take on The United States in the third-place match, and the bronze medal is at stake.

The game is set to take place in Kashima on Thursday, and the gold medal match between Canada and Sweden will be held in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Friday.
