Moto: The history is written heartbeat to heartbeat

Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid was founded on April 26, 1903, by three Basque students living in Madrid. Atlético de Madrid is the 3rd most successful team in La Liga after Real Madrid and Barcelona. They have been part of the Primera Division since its foundation in 1928.

The founders of Atlético de Madrid saw the new club as a junior version of their childhood club, Athletic Bilbao. Atletico Madrid broke away from parent club Athletic Bilbao in 1921 and relocated to the Estadio Metropolitano de Madrid, a 35,800-seater stadium designed by the corporation.

Atlético de Madrid was one of the founding members of the Primera Division and has been part of La Liga since 1928. The club won their first La Liga in 1939-40. They have won 10 La Liga titles with a domestic double in 1996.

Atlético reached new heights in the 21st Century. They won their La Liga in 2014 after defeating Barcelona. Atletico reached two UCL finals in 3 seasons and also defeated Real Madrid to win the UEFA super cup.

Atléco Madrid has seen quite a number of great players playing on their crest. Names like Antonio Munoz, Isacio Calleja, Gabi are considered as club legends. Diego Forlan has won two golden boots during his tenure for the club.

Modern-day great footballers like Fernando Torres, Diego Godin, Jan Oblak & Antoine Griezmann have guided the club towards the shining moments of the 21st Century.

Adelardo Rodríguez has the most appearances for the club(553). At the same time, Luis Aragonés is the top scorer with 173 goals. Jan Oblak has a record number of Clean Sheets.

The match between Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid is considered the Madrid Derby. The rivalry between the two clubs dates back to the early twentieth century. Atletico Madrid stood in the way of Real Madrid’s ambitions to establish themselves as the capital’s strongest team. It is the second biggest match in Spanish football, and in the 21’st century, after the growth of Atletico’s fan base, the derby madness has been a worldwide phenomenon.

The club has been in good hands since its foundation. Radomir Antić leads the club to its first double win in 1996.

Diego Simeone became the manager of Atletico Madrid in 2011. Many refer to the former Argentine as El Cholo because of his past as a midfielder. Atletico Madrid has won one La Liga, one Copa Del Rey, two UEFA Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, and twice reached the Champions League finals under Simeone’s leadership and management.
