Barcelona chief offers pessimistic update on club’s transfer plans

Barcelona CEO Mateu Alemany has provided a worrying update on transfer plans, stating that it would be hard to sign new players in January without selling a few.

The Catalan giants are currently going through a deep economic crisis and have many outcasts like Samuel Umtiti and Philippe Coutinho, who are on high salary terms.

New manager Xavi is looking for reinforcements in January and has identified Raheem Sterling and Dani Olmo as potential targets. However, it seems like there would be hardly any incomings without the departures of fringe players.

Alemany said (h/t Marca): “For January, we’ll see [if there are signings].

“There is a month and a half and we are working on different situations. As of today, there is no possibility of making signings in January. On the 1st, we’ll see.”

Laporta speaks about the potential return of legends Messi, Iniesta

Barca president Joan Laporta didn’t rule out the return of Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta when he was quizzed about the two legends during Dani Alves’ presentation.

Laporta said (h/t Marca): “I do not rule it out. These are people who have made this club great. Messi and Iniesta are spectacular, I cannot predict the future, as they are still playing, but they have made the club great, we always keep them in mind, although now they have contracts with others clubs and you have to respect that, but in life you never know.”

There have already been reports about Xavi wanting to sign Messi when his contract at PSG expires in 2023.
