Bayern Munich eyeing a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong-Barcelona

The Bavarians look to take advantage of the economic crisis at Barca.

Bayern Munich have set their sights on Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

According to a report from El Nacional via Bavarian Football Works, Bayern have held initial talks with the Catalan club over the transfer of De Jong.

Barca are currently in a deep crisis both financially and in terms of performance and they appear to be open to selling the Dutch midfielder.

Furthermore, Ronald Koeman’s dismissal has made De Jong no more untouchable, with plenty of young midfielders from the academy ranks already showing great potential.

The Catalan giants broke the banks for De Jong’s signing in 2019, edging out a host of Europe’s top clubs in the transfer race.

The 24-year-old has since been an integral part of the midfield but he could have become weary over Barca’s failure to win any major trophies in the last two seasons.

Although the Catalans are ready to sell the Netherlands international, the final decision could rest upon new manager Xavi. It remains to be seen whether the former Blaugrana midfielder would see De Jong in his plans.

On the other hand, Bayern boast one of best squads in Europe and De Jong’s signing would be icing on the cake.

The former Ajax star’s stock hasn’t dipped due to his consistent performances and Barca want to ease their financial crisis with his sale.

Xavi would be demanding a few new faces in the January transfer window, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Kingsley Coman being linked to the Nou Camp.
