Javi Martinez hands Bayern Munich a parting gift with winning goal in 2-1 Super Cup victory

Bayern Munich have picked up a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup final earlier today.

Lucas Ocampos scored the opening goal of the game from the penalty spot to give the Spanish side the lead on the 13th minute.

However, the German champions fought back well and got back on level terms when Leon Goretzka scored on the 34th minute.

Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard started for Bundesliga champions, leaving Alphonso Davies on the bench. At front, Gnabry and Sane started with Robert Lewandowski.

Both teams managed to put in a fantastic performance and they cancelled each other out for the rest of the game. Sevilla did exceedingly well at the back to keep the likes of Lewandowski quiet throughout the game.

Bayern were the better team heading into the game and that extra bit of quality made all the difference in the end as the German giants scored a fantastic goal through Javi Martinez in the first half of extra time.

Though Robert Lewandowski, who is missing in the scoresheet, has hit the back of the net twice. But those were ruled out on accounts of offside and fouling Sevilla defender. Perhaps the Polish may not be at fault in the second occasion. Another effort from Leroy Sane was ruled out by referee.

Hansi Flick’s men did well to hold on to their lead and grind out the win eventually.

The German outfit have started the season impressively and they were rampant in the League earlier this month.

They will be delighted to have won the UEFA Super Cup against a fantastic team like Sevilla.

It could give them an immense morale boost heading into their upcoming League fixtures.

The Bavarian giants will be favourites to retain their domestic crown this season and it will be interesting to see if they can replicate their performances from the last season when they won the treble.
