Marseille picked up a 3-1 win over St Etienne in Ligue 1 earlier tonight.

After the controversial clash with Nice in the previous game week, Marseille came into the game hoping to pick up all three points and they will be delighted with their performance here.

The home side are now level on points with second-placed Nice having picked up seven points from their three league games.

Here at Anytime football, we look at the three major talking points from tonight’s contest.

Strong showing from the Guendouzi and new signings

The likes of Cengiz Under, Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba were excellent for Marseille tonight.

Manager Jorge Sampaoli will be reasonably pleased with the display of his players in an important game.

Guendouzi scored the opening goal of the game on the 23rd minute and Cengiz Under wrapped up the scoring for the hosts in the second half.

The former Arsenal midfielder could have easily added another but he was denied by the crossbar.

Dominant display from Marseille

The home side were undoubtedly the better team tonight and they deserved to pick up all three points.

Marseille dominated the game from start to finish and they managed to create 15 attempts from open play compared to just nine from St Etienne.

Sampaoli’s men were efficient in front of the goal as well and they managed to convert their goal-scoring opportunities without wasting too many chances.

Defensive lapse from St Etienne

The visitors deservedly crashed to a 3-1 defeat and Claude Puel’s defensive unit let him down tonight.

The likes of Saidou Sow, Harold Moukoudi and Etienne Green were particularly poor at the back for the visitors and St Etienne will have to improve at the back if they want to finish higher up the table this season.
