Arteta’s baffling decision to leave behind Emiliano Martinez

Emiliano Martinez eyeing Aston Villa transfer from Arsenal

Martinez’s stock has hiked since his transfer to Aston Villa from Arsenal.

Emiliano Martinez first broke into the public’s eye after his brilliant stretch at Arsenal towards the latter stages of the 19/20 season in place of the injured Bernd Leno.

The Argentine made every chance count in that period, keeping 4 clean sheets in 11 games and also led the Gunners to the FA Cup trophy.

While Martinez’s career appeared to take shape after 10 long years, Mikel Arteta decided to leave the Argentine behind in favour of Leno.

The Argentine goalkeeper joined Aston Villa last year, and he hasn’t looked back since then.

In his first season at Villa Park, he kept 15 cleans and was up there with the top goalkeepers of the Premier League.

However, the most significant achievement of his career yet happened in the summer. Martinez inspired Argentina to Copa America 2021 title. He will be remembered for his heroics in the semi-finals against Colombia, where he made a string of saves in the penalty shootout.

Football Journalist Luke Hatfield feels that letting Martinez go was the biggest mistake of Arteta.

Hatfield told GivemeSport: “The big one I think which really stings Arsenal fans is the Martinez stuff because you look back now and think what on earth were Arsenal thinking in letting such a talented goalkeeper go because at Villa he’s blossomed, he’s become Argentina’s number one and probably tripled his value now, and Arsenal have spent another £30m on another goalkeeper to compete with Leno.”

The Gunners signed Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United in the summer transfer window, and he has made a good impression this season.
