Atletico Madrid held to 1-1 draw by Lokomotiv Moscow in UCL

Jose Gimenez-Atletico Madrid

A goalless second half League saw both the sides share points in the group stage fixture.

Atletico Madrid squared off against Lokomotiv Moscow in the group stage away fixture.

The visitors drew blood after Jose Gimenez’s header met the cross from the Mexican international Hector Herrera, moments after Atletico tested Moscow’s defence.

However, the lead was soon cancelled out by Lokomotiv Moscow after they were awarded a penalty for Herrera’s handball inside the box, which the referee confirmed by consulting the VAR. Miranchuk, the scorer against Bayern Munich last week, converted the penalty successfully after sending Jan Oblak the wrong away.

Angelo Correa could have restored the lead at the end of the first half before his shot hit the woodwork.

Atletico dominated the possession in the second half but it was goalkeeper Guilherme who stood between Atletico’s chances and the goal.

The Brazilian goalkeeper made a handful of saves in the second half and was probably the standout player of Lokomotiv Moscow. Firstly, Joao Felix forced a top-class save from Guilherme from a long-range before the Portuguese’s leaping header was also snuffed out by the keeper.

Atletico Madrid are unfortunate to pick up a draw for all their missed opportunities and on the other hand, Lokomotiv Moscow would be more than happy to share a point.

The Russian outfit put up a great fight against Bayern Munich last week despite ending on the losing side. They will be motivated a lot after holding out another European giant, Atletico.
