Lazio got off to an impressive start in their Champions League opener.
Lazio have defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the Champions League group stage game at Stadio Olimpico.
Ciro Immobile opened the account in little more than five minutes after a sluggish defensive work from the visitors.
Thomas Meunier made a disastrous pass which fell in the way of Joaquin Correa who then squared off to Immobile in the box.
The Biancocelesti doubled the lead in the 23rd minute after an own goal from Marwin Hitz. The Dortmund goalkeeper was caught off guard from the corner kick of Luis Alberto.
While the scoreline was 2-0, Dortmund striker Erling Haaland pulled one back after a delicate low cross from Gio Reyna.
However, Lazio soon restored the two-goal cushion when they caught Die Borussen on the break. Alberto found Immobile in the box through a long ball before the Italian striker squared it off to Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro, who scored his maiden goal for Lazio.
Haaland had a great chance for a return goal but he couldn’t direct his header to the nets as it flew over the post before what looked a conventional fingertip save from Thomas Strakosha.
Dortmund entered the game with a dangerous-looking attacking unit however they eventually failed to breach through Lazio’s defence.
Lazio had a tumultuous start to Serie A this season, but they have now impressed on their return to Champions League after a decade.
