The 26-year-old is expected to be in the starting 11 ahead of Marcus Rashford, Grealish and Foden.

England manager Gareth Southgate will reportedly start Raheem Sterling for Sunday’s game against Croatia in European Championship.

The 26-year-old is also likely to beat the likes of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden to make it to the starting 11.

The decision comes as a surprise as Sterling endured a lacklustre season with Manchester City, which saw him go down the pecking order of Pep Guardiola.

Grealish and Foden are expected to take the fall despite enjoying a productive season with Aston Villa and Man City, respectively. The former continued his fine form in the Premier League last term while the latter ended up winning PFA Premier League’s young player of the season.

Southgate remains keen on utilising a four in the back system, and if it is the case, an extra attacker has to be deployed. With Harry Kane, Mason Mount and Sterling appear to be the first choice, Grealisha and Foden could lose their place to Rashford, who remains untouchable under Southgate.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Sterling experiment would succeed since Man City failed with it during the Champions League final against Chelsea.

Three Lions will kickstart their Euro 2020 campaign on Sunday against Croatia – a replay of the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Southgate will be aiming for his first silverware with the Three Lions since taking charge in 2016.
