Leipzig 0-2 Liverpool: Salah, Mane capitalise on defensive mistakes, Reds register a vital away win

Liverpool picked up a morale-boosting 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League knockouts earlier tonight.

The Reds came into this game on the back of three consecutive defeats and they needed a positive result in the first leg in order to have a chance of progressing into the quarter-finals of the competition.

Both teams were quite evenly matched in the first half and RB Leipzig had the better chances in the opening stages of the game.

Angelino hit the crossbar with his effort and Alisson produced a big save off Christopher Nkunku while it was 0-0.

Mohamed Salah capitalised on an error in the second half to put the Reds ahead and Nordi Mukiele’s error allowed Sadio Mane to double Liverpool’s advantage a few minutes later.

The likes of Hwang Hee-Chan and Dani Olmo had chances to put RB Leipzig on the score sheet but they failed to hit the target in the second half. Liverpool were not at their best defensively and they will be relieved to have come away with a clean sheet.

Julian Nagelsmann will be thoroughly disappointed with his team’s performance ear.

Liverpool were lacking in form and confidence and this was a good opportunity for the German side to pick up a win in the first leg.

It will be interesting to see if they can overturn the deficit and book their place in the quarter-finals with a win in the second leg at Anfield now.

As for Liverpool, tonight’s win will give them massive confidence ahead of this weekend’s Darby game against Everton in the Premier League.
