Georgia 1-2 Spain: Dani Olmo’s last gasp strike earns a thrilling win for Spain

Dani Olmo-Spain

Spain broke Georgia’s hearts after Olmo’s last-minute winner.

Spain have edged out Georgia 2-1 in a thrilling encounter where Dani Olmo grabbed the stoppage-time winner.

The visitors were trailing by a goal before half time when Georgia’s young forward Kvaratskhelia found the nets.

The Spaniards were able to equalise after Ferran Torres rushed at the right time to send Jordi Alba’s cross to the nets.

While the game looked as if it was heading to a draw, Spain put a dagger in the hosts’ heart after goalkeeper Loria couldn’t hold on to Olmo’s strike despite the diving efforts.

It wasn’t a typical performance from Spain as they completely struggled to take down Georgia’s defence.

Especially, Alvaro Morata failed to make his presence felt despite playing as the focal point of the attack.

Barcelona midfielder Pedri managed to outshine all of his teammates with a sparkling display in his first-ever start with the national team, having made his debut days ago. The 18-year-old’s amazing skills, technical ability and work rate made Luis Enrique persist with him for the entire ninety minutes.

Alba had a relatively impressive game after providing all of Spain’s two assists.

The defence of Eric Garcia and Inigo Martinez had a rather decent night, with the former making a few crucial interceptions.

Spain are now back at the top of their group and will face Kosovo in their next game in World Cup Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the defeat would be heartbreaking for Georgia, who had almost held Spain before a last-minute strike from Olmo ruined a dream result.
