Robert Lewandowski headed Bayern Munich 1-0 ahead at Opel Arena, Mainz and Thomas Muller doubled the lead with Thiago scored a fine solo goal.
Hans-Dieter Flick’s side are now one point above previous leaders RB Leipzig going into next Sunday’s fixture between the teams.
Leipzig could have returned to the top of Bundesliga table, had they beaten Mönchengladbach, but they were relieved to have a point after coming from 0-2 down.
Borussia Dortmund moved up to third place with a 5-0 win over Union Berlin.
